Chapter 5: The Best Bartender
A few days later….
MC: Okay! I’ve asked everyone about their cocktails and got some good practice in! I’m feeling good! (Although, I am a little nervous about answering questions they may ask. If I don’t pass, I wonder if they’ll kick me out of the house)
*knock*
Yes? It’s open!
Tom Collins: Alright, it’s the last spurt. But since you’ve practiced, you’ll do fine.
MC: Yeah, but I’m a little worried… I might get so nervous that I blank and forget everything.
Tom Collins: Relax. Ah, right. I wonder if you could make us some cocktails during the test that really show your ability. If you feel nervous you should use the scent of a cocktail that uses oranges.. like a fuzzy navel. The recipe is a bit different than usual, but please drink it.
MC: Why did you use a different recipe?
Tom Collins: Because it’s before your test. Normally, there’s not so much alcohol in a fuzzy navel, but I went ahead and used a more moderate amount of peach liquor for you. It’s important to make drinks according to their recipes, but as bartenders, it’s our job to think about our partners who drink cocktails. Because everyone is right there in front of you.
MC: (Think of the people who are right in front of us…)
Tom Collins: When you finish, we’ll head into the living room. Master and everyone is there waiting for you.
Grandpa: Now, we will begin the test. Are you ready?
MC: Y-yeah, all set!
Grandpa: First, we will start with a martini. Since it’s our most popular drink.
MC: A martini has… umm…ah! right! It’s the same as a Tom Collins, a gin base. 60ml of dry gin, 20ml of dry vermouth, you pour the ingredients into a mixing glass with some ice, then stir… And finally, if it’s alright with the customer, you add an olive on a toothpick
Martini: ….perfect recipe
MC: Martini, I heard that you used to like sweet drinks, but over time, you grew to like drinks that have more of a kick. I wonder what kind of martini you would have preferred back when you liked sweet drinks..
Grandpa: You studied more than just the original recipes?
MC: Everyone taught me many things about cocktails. I was able to learn the recipes, and ask everyone about the origins of their names and their stories.
Emerald Mist: As for any cocktails in which we have no members named after, we drilled her with questions until she became tired.
Moulin Rouge: You don’t sound as dissatisfied as you would like to be
Emerald Mist: You!
Grandpa: It seems you had a lot of fun while learning about it all. Now, let’s move on to the next question.
MC: okay!
Adonis: Another perfect cocktail! So amazing!
Kamikaze: She had been practicing late at night while eating dinner as well…
Adonis: Are you trying to tell me that the two of you…
Kamikaze: I had some snacks lying around, so I decided to give her some.
Adonis: I wish she would have told me.. I would have prepared a full course meal for her!
Tom Collins: Master, shall we continue?
Grandpa: The recipe she used seems okay. I wonder if she will be able to keep this up while listening to the customer’s stories. Now then, do you think you can make a cocktail just for me?
MC: Sure, what will you have?
Grandpa: I’ll leave that to you.
MC: huh?
Grandpa: It’s also a bartender’s duty to be able to produce a cocktail that matches with the customer.
MC: …got it. I’ll think of something. (It’s okay. With where I’m at now, I’ll be fine)
Here we are, one Hot Brandy Milk.
Grandpa: Why did you choose this?
MC: It’s been a long test, and you’ve been giving me a lot of questions. I thought you would be tired. So I made this to help you relax.
Grandpa: If you wanted me to feel relaxed, there are plenty of other cocktails that could do that.
MC: …I wanted you to drink hot milk. After my parents died, there were many nights when I couldn’t sleep, so you made me hot milk. I've never really cried since then; I guess you could say I became an adult.
Grandpa: ah….
Moulin Rouge: I didn’t know that was the last time you cried… Just hearing it is making me tear up.
Tom Collins: This cocktail is filled with all your emotions. As a bartender, this is the greatest kind of cocktail you can make.
Grandpa: You’ve done so well. I’m sorry I made you remember such terrible times. But I can now say that I can leave the bar in your hands and not feel worried. Please do your very best from now on.
MC: Thank y–…
Tom Collins: Are you okay?
MC: Ugh, my head feels a little…. Now that everything’s over, I wonder if….
Martini: A fever from working too hard?
MC: Haha, maybe that’s… *boom*
Tom Collins: Woah!
Martini: hey!
